An RCMP officer is facing firearms charges as the result of an investigation into a complaint stemming from an incident on Bell Island three years ago.
Director of SIRT-NL, Mike King says the officer has been charged with one count each of careless use of a firearm and pointing a firearm, following an RNC investigation.
Michael Wheeler has been released on conditions pending a court appearance.
Wheeler most recently served at the RCMP’s Holyrood Detachment. He has been suspended with pay since February of last year as per RCMP policy subject to the outcome of the court and internal processes.
SIRT-NL will conduct its own investigations into serious incidents involving police officers once it is fully operational.
