The governing Liberals say they will address the exorbitant costs for women and couples whose only option to conceive a child is through fertility clinics.
Newfoundland and Labrador is one of two provinces that does not have an in-vitro fertilization clinic. The province does offer support before and after the treatment.
But Ledon Wellon, an advocate for such services, says that still means people must leave the province, which amounts to time lost from work—let alone the cost of travel, hotels, meals and the treatment itself.
She says the financial aspect is a huge obstacle, not to mention the $30,000 clinic cost and roughly five weeks away from work. She says having a clinic in this province would eliminate much of that burden.
The Liberals say they will review funding opportunities to help ease those financial burdens for people who must travel to out-of-province fertility clinics for treatment.
