The entire province is reverting back to Alert Level 5 due to the UK variant (B117) which is linked to the current outbreak in the metro region.
There are currently 260 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, most of those cases reported this week alone.
In areas where the UK variant has been previously detected, it quickly becomes the dominant strain.
Alert Level 5 is the most restrictive of the alert levels set by Public Health in Newfoundland and Labrador.
That means people must be limited to their household bubbles and most businesses and services are closed to the public.
- Gatherings of more than 5 people are prohibited.
- Funerals, wakes, and visitations are prohibited.
- Burials and weddings are limited to no more than 5 people, including the officiant.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says the situation cannot be “sugar-coated” and asymptomatic spread must be contained.
I just had a call with Premier @FureyAndrew about the serious COVID-19 outbreak in Newfoundland and Labrador. The federal government stands ready to provide any and all support the province needs to deal with this surge.
