The English School District has decided to suspend all in-class instruction across the Avalon Peninsula due to the influx of COVID-19 cases among students.
The district issued notice shortly before midnight that students won’t return to the classroom until at least Friday, February 26.
CEO and Director of Education Tony Stack says the decision was made due to the large number of students identified for self-isolation. The action is effective immediately.
In Thursday’s COVID-19 update, 74 of the 100 newly-confirmed cases were among people under 20 years of age.
Intermediate and High School grades begin online classes starting Monday, while Primary and Elementary students will begin on Tuesday.
All school staff, excluding those required to self-isolate, are expected to report to work today to prepare for online instruction.
With the support of Public Health, Stack says the decision was made in the best interests of student learning and safety.
He adds, “We know this is difficult on our staff, families, and our young learners and ask for your patience as we work through this process.”
Please be advised that the District has suspended in-class instruction for all remaining schools in the Avalon region. Complete information is available at https://t.co/Hc6L46pfOP #nlschools #staystafe pic.twitter.com/R0t6VS4iNB
