Premier Tony Wakeham is choosing to focus on the work of the Churchill Falls MOU review team and their pending report in the face of questions around former premier Danny Williams’ involvement in the decision-making process.
Last week it was revealed that Williams donated nearly $47,000 to the PCs during the election. He has wholeheartedly admitted he did so because he thought the Liberals were getting “bamboozled” by Quebec.
The Liberals are asking if Williams is the one pulling the strings in the process, and if the deal is dead.
On that point, Wakeham chooses to instead focus on the review panel that has been set up, saying he is looking forward to receiving their report in a couple of weeks.
As for the Liberals’ insinuation that the decision could already be made, Wakeham says “they’re entitled to their opinion. But the reality is there’s an independent review committee in place, they are going about doing their work, and they will present their report at the end of April and I look forward to their recommendations.”
Wakeham lumped Williams’ public opinion of the MOU in with the rest of the public discussion when asked about the level of influence the former premier may have over the decision-making process.
“Mr. Williams and many others have made comments around the concerns they’ve expressed with the MOU. Many people are concerned about the MOU, and some have been supportive of the MOU. And that’s why it was so important for me to turn around and do this independent review. When we talk about signing up potentially for another 50 years, we have to make sure we get it right.”
