The PC government will announce the date for its first budget next week.
Up until now there has been no firm commitment on when the financial blueprint would be presented.
The House of Assembly is currently on a two-week break for Easter, and when they reconvene next week, Premier Tony Wakeham says details on the timing of budget day will be revealed.
“I would think that next week, the finance minister will stand up in the House and give you a date.”
Liberals Calling on Government to Table Budget
The Opposition is calling on the provincial government to bring down its budget sooner rather than later because “Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can’t wait forever.”
Liberal Leader John Hogan says Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are struggling with affordability, and PC promises to address those needs should be delivered sooner, rather than later.
When the budget is eventually brought down, it will be the latest date that a provincial budget has been released since the pandemic.
Hogan says every day the war in Iran drags on, residents in this province “suffer” with the high cost of fuel and other goods.
He says ordinary people are suffering as the U.S. President changes his mind on the goal and scope of the war.
“We can’t control the war, but we can control things here at home and we’d expect to see that in the budget and Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should know when they can expect that relief that’s been promised to them. So I would suggest, the Minister of Finance should really come out this week, if not today, and at least tell Newfoundlanders and Labradorians when they can expect to hear from them.”
