Thousands took in the final send-off for George Murphy today. Interest in his funeral service was so great the live stream crashed.
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians were shocked to learn of Murphy’s sudden passing one week ago at the age of 58. Murphy was a former MHA, a long-time member of the local cab industry, and was an active agent for change having launched the effort to introduce move-over laws in the province.
He was perhaps best known for his weekly gas price predictions, a service he provided to the public free of charge.
The funeral service began at 11:00 this morning, with George’s eulogy being prepared by his friend Toni Marie Wiseman and read by Mike Goosney.
George Murphy is remembered as a “giant of a man” both in stature and in his bright, caring personality and measure of his character.
Tributes to George have been pouring in all week, with memories from friends, family, and followers of his weekly gas price predictions being shared all over the island.
I’m shocked and deeply saddened to hear George Murphy has passed, he was a friend and we will all miss his kind hearted spirit. RIP.
