It may look nice to some, but those who come to acquire it sure wish it would go away.
Goutweed, an invasive plant that takes over your garden and kills other plants around it, is not for the faint of heart.
Some people in this province have come to find it in their garden, and as one PEI woman explains, trying to remove it can be a challenge.
Carla MacDonald-Campbell battled Goutweed herself, so she created the “Goutweed Support Group” on Facebook to deal with what she calls the trauma of Goutweed.
The group now has over 2,000 members. MacDonald-Campbell says although created jokingly, it gained popularity as a place to share tips and vent about the pesky plant.
She says for some reason, garden stores still sell a type of Goutweed called snow on the mountain. She acquired it, like many others when it was gifted to her unknowingly. She says she didn’t notice it in her garden for a few years, but when she finally discovered it, it was well-entrenched.
MacDonald-Campbell says there is no quick fix.
Members of the support group have spent years and thousands of dollars trying to tackle the problem. Some have had to dig down four feet, remove the topsoil, fill it with gravel and a barrier and put new flowers in above-ground planters.
She is not sure if you can ever really get rid of it, but it can be managed, however, it can become a yearly project.
