An advocate for cycling is raising concerns about safe space for riders following two recent accidents in the capital city.
Meghan Hollett, an avid cyclist, is also running in the upcoming municipal election in St. John’s this fall.
She calls recent accidents which happened over the last two weekends “atrocious,” and says she can’t understand why people can’t have a safe space to ride in the city.
Overall, she says riding in the city is great, but she’s had her close calls.
She cites areas such as Kenmount Road and Topsail Road where there are four lanes of traffic. She says those roads are built for the car, but nothing beyond that.
She is advocating for a better design of the city’s roadways, which would include things like designated space for cyclists.
