Residents of Bell Island feel they are left with no choice but to protest the reduced ferry services tomorrow at the Confederation Building in St. John’s.
Currently the Beaumont Hamel is the only ferry operating in the tickle, a smaller vessel with less capacity.
Now, a medical transportation advocate is throwing his support behind the residents of Bell Island who are calling for better service.
Eugene Nippard is the chair of the Air Ambulance Medical Transport Advocacy Group, and a resident of Deep Bay Fogo Island. He says he understands the impact a lack of transportation can mean for island residents.
Nippard says government has “not done its homework” because there are no spare ferries available to fix the issue. He says if the Beaumont needs repairs today, it would be a disaster as there would be no back up plan.
He understands that ferries need maintenance, but says the decline in service is simply not good enough and needs to be addressed by government.
The Bell Island ferry protest will take place in front of the Confederation Building from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday.
