It’s going to be a hot one today, and with such high temperatures comes the risk of things such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Most areas of the province today will be seeing temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s, with some humidex values reaching the upper 30s.
Dr. Mike Wahl is a professor in the faculty of medicine at MUN, and also hosts the Wellness and Healthy Lifestyle Show on VOCM Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon.
Wahl explains that there are three warning signs people should look for when out in the heat: Heat cramps, excessive sweating, and then heat stroke, which Wahl explains can be dangerous.
He says people will stop sweating, then become nauseous and light-headed. He says that’s when your body temperature goes above 40 degrees.
To stay healthy in the sun, Wahl says to stay hydrated and to monitor sun exposure. If you have to be outside, wear loose-fitting cool clothes.
If any of the three warning signs begin to happen, he says to get into the shade and try to cool down. If one’s condition grows serious, he says to seek medical attention.
