Both the Newfoundland and Labrador summer and winter games have been postponed until 2024, and according to SportNL, that decision mostly came down to timing.
The summer games were originally supposed to happen last year, with the winter games taking place in 2022.
The pandemic forced the 2020 games to be cancelled, but with vaccines rolling out and many areas returning to normal, there was some hope that the games could be held safely next year.
However, according to Troy Croft, Executive Director of SportNL, the host committee ideally needs a couple of years to plan for the games.
Complicating the situation further, Croft explains that there are other major sporting events that need to be considered, eliminating the possibility of holding them in 2023.
He says the Canada Games are taking place in 2023 in PEI, and it wouldn’t be possible to have those games and the Newfoundland and Labrador games in the same year.
