The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 1620 has made a donation of $30,000 to help support an Afghan family of four.
A plane carrying 116 refugees from Afghanistan arrived in St. John’s last week. All of the newcomers are currently quarantining in a hotel.
Megan Morris, executive director of the Association of New Canadians, explains that the family who will benefit from the donation has not yet been chosen. She says the team that oversees the program will go through the applications and make a fair selection.
Morris says it’s not often that they see a donation that large. She says she’s always amazed at the kindness of people in the province.
Don Murphy, the business manager and financial secretary with the union, says members are “ecstatic” with the donation. He says it’s going to the right place for the right reason.
