The Labrador City Fire Chief is urging caution this holiday season after a Christmas tree fire broke out over the weekend.
Just before noon on Saturday, Labrador City Fire Rescue responded to a fire on Beverly Crescent where an artificial Christmas tree had caught ablaze due to a power surge in the area.
No one was injured, however a pet was killed by the fire. The homeowners say they had turned their tree off overnight, but turned the lights back on in the morning. The lights were plugged directly into the outlet.
Fire Chief Joe Power shared a few tips on how to avoid fires during the holiday season.
Power says to make sure you are using the correct lights, that use low energy and are approved by a testing lab. He says to never use a damaged or frayed cord. Residents should unplug their lights at night, and use a power bar if possible.
Power also says artificial trees should be flame resistant and have a stamp of approval from a recognized testing lab.
