It now looks like it’s going to be later in the week before the TCH on the southwest coast reopens.
Repair crews had hoped ty\o reconnect the island by mid-week, but workers lost a solid 24 hours when Mother Nature opened up Monday night and early Tuesday. Some washouts have been repaired but it will probably be Friday or Saturday before the highway can again accommodate thru traffic.
On the plus side, no significant additional damage occurred from those heavy rains the other night.
Update on TCH repairs near Port aux Basques:
👉Backfilling continues on installed culverts
👉Installation of remaining culverts was delayed due to elevated water levels overnight
👉 TCH here to reopen later in the weekMore details: https://t.co/Fnnibq7W6G #nltraffic

Meanwhile, parts of British Columbia are again under siege with rainstorm number three.
Stephen Evans, who lives in Abbottsford but is originally from Stephenville, says provisions have been put in place to try to prevent flooding, including calling in the military to help with sandbagging.
He says they have put in a wall across the Trans-Canada between Abbottsford and Chilliwack to stop the water from backing up into the Sumas Flat, with a pump station working to capacity.
