An RNC officer convicted of sexual assault has submitted an appeal to the courts, which is drawing the ire of women’s rights activists.
Douglas Snelgrove was found guilty by a jury last May for sexually assaulting a woman he drove home from downtown while on duty in 2014. It was the third time he was on trial for the offence after the first two were thrown out due to judges’ errors.
Snelgrove was handed a four-year sentence last month.
His lawyer has submitted an appeal, the details of which are not yet known.
Courtney Clarke, an activist who recently created the Jane Doe Award in Anti-Violence Research at MUN, was stern in her messaging upon learning of the appeal.
She says it’s time for Snelgrove to “be quiet, do his time, to get immense amounts of therapy, and to leave Jane Doe alone.” She says if the legal system entertains the appeal, they will have a lot of explaining to do.
