Newfoundland and Labrador has made the top ten weather stories in Canada in 2021.
David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada and the country’s top weather guru, puts Hurricane Larry at number 9. Larry was one of 21 named tropical storms in the Atlantic Basin this year and seven hurricanes, of which four were major or intense with sustained winds of 178 km/h or more.
Larry entered Canadian waters on September 10, making landfall just west of the Avalon Peninsula at about midnight with sustained winds of 130 km/h and gusts to 180 km/h. The winds caused widespread power outages, toppled trees and sent branches flying. The storm surge combined with high tides to do a lot of damage to infrastructure and flooding many homes, especially in the St. Mary’s Bay area.
Property losses from the insurance sector topped $25-million with 2200 claims.
