A 39-year-old man has been charged after he was allegedly caught by police driving at over double the posted speed limit in Benoit’s Cove.
According to Corner Brook RCMP, shortly before 1 a.m. this morning police clocked a car traveling at 116 km/h on Main Street, which is a 50 km/h zone.
Police attempted to pull the car over but the driver continued speeding and passing other vehicles in an unsafe manner.
Moments later the vehicle stopped for police.
Police say the driver, Jeffrey Hickey, showed signs of drug impairment, and while being arrested he is said to have allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted a police officer.
Hickey appeared in court earlier today to answer to numerous charges. They are dangerous driving, drug-impaired driving, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, and possession of cocaine.
Hickey has also been charged under the highway traffic act for three violations. As well, his license has been suspended and his vehicle impounded.
