A Grammy-award winning music producer, musician and audio engineer wants to share with the community and preserve and share the cultural and historic significance the old Anglican Church in Winterton, Trinity Bay.
Los Angeles-based Greg Wells grew up in Ontario but has deep roots in Trinity Bay with connections to the Green family of Winterton.
His father and grandfather were both United Church ministers, and his grandfather preached in the United Church in Winterton.
Wells recalls suddenly getting a feeling while putting his daughter to bed that he should check online and see if the United Church in Winterton was for sale.
As luck would have it, he found an ad and responded immediately only to learn that the church was already sold. That’s when he turned his attention to the nearby Anglican Church which was also up for sale.
Wells has worked with some of the biggest names in music including Celine Dion, Elton John, Aerosmith, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, and says while it’s possible he may invite some artists to come to Newfoundland to record, his main interest is in keeping the building part of the community.
“I don’t want this to be about me or the people I work with,” Wells says adamantly, “I really want this to be about putting that church back into the hands of the people of Winterton,” adding that he’s open to ideas.
He’s already booked a number of weddings for the building, and will get a chance to visit his new purchase for the first time this summer when he attends the Green family reunion in July.
