A Newfoundland airport lounge, considered one of the world’s finest examples of modernist design, is reopening to the public later this month.
The international departures lounge at Gander International Airport—once considered the Crossroads of the World—was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1959, and features a 22-foot mural “Flight and Its Allegories” by Canadian artist Kenneth Lochhead.
The future of the famous landmark, which saw politicians and dignitaries from around the world, was placed in jeopardy when the Gander International Airport Authority was considering what to do with the space in light of reduced airport traffic.
The unique space has not changed in the last 60 years and retains its original glamour and style.
With the help of the provincial and federal governments, the lounge was recently restored and will officially reopen to the public on June 29.
