Government’s apology for abuse suffered at youth centres 40 to 50 years ago wasn’t requested but will be welcomed by victims, says the lawyer representing them.
Yesterday, lawyers for the province stated the government is sorry for the harm done at the three centres; two in St. John’s and one in Whitbourne.
It came during a hearing in Supreme Court, which must still approve the $12.5-million settlement reached between the province and about 100 plaintiffs.
Lawyer Lynn Moore says the apology was unsolicited and will be meaningful.
She says they did not negotiate for the apology, adding it was made of government’s own volition, but she says the remorse will be appreciated by the plaintiffs.
Such settlements are rarely rejected but are scrutinized for fairness and could be adjusted by the court.
