A monument dedicated to the Man of a Thousand Songs was unveiled in his hometown of Ferryland on Saturday.
It recognizes the life and music of the legendary Ron Hynes, and his induction into the Canadian Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.
Hynes spent his childhood in Ferryland and returned to live in the family home where he passed away of cancer in 2015.
Hynes released 10 solo albums, was a founding member of The Wonderful Grand Band, and authored many Newfoundland classics including Sonny’s Dream and St. John’s Waltz. He was inducted into the national Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2020.
Many of Ron’s musical comrades and Grand Band members were in Ferryland on Saturday for the event, including Boomer Stamp, Sandy Morris, Ian Perry and Paul Kinsman.
Designed by St. John’s-based artist, Jud Haynes, the monument stands in front of the Regional Arts Centre, overlooking the islands and Ferryland Downs that are visible from Hynes’ childhood home.
