A long-time volunteer from the Brigus area has been named as the winner of the VOCM Cares Foundation’s Gordon Seabright Volunteer of the Year Award.
Gerald Mercer has been named this year’s winner of the prize.
The award, named after a former VOCM Cares board member, recognizes outstanding leadership and commitment to their community.
The President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65 and an officer with the Seacadet Corps, Mercer of Brigus has been actively involved in the community for over 40 years. He also served as a town councillor and volunteer fire chief in Brigus.

Mercer calls it “the top of the world” for him.
The award comes with a $1,000 donation to a charity of the recipient’s choice. Mercer plans to donate the funds to the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign.
