One woman is mind-blown by the response from the community after she set up a fundraiser for a hardworking Ukrainian family in their time of need.
Nicole English witnessed an accident in front of her home in Petty Harbour. The driver, a Ukrainian refugee who was on his way to his second job, was unharmed but devastated by the significant damage sustained by the vehicle.
The man, his pregnant wife, and their 18-month-old child will be taking in a Ukrainian refugee family in the fall. He told English he was worried about being able to feed his family.
English says it wasn’t a hard decision to offer the man some help.
English, her husband, and another woman asked the man if he would be ok if they set up a GoFundMe fundraiser for him online, and he agreed.
The group set up the fundraiser, and in two short days, their goal of $5,000 was reached.
English says the money was originally being raised to get the man a new car, but a mechanic has since taken the vehicle in to see if there was anything that could be done. She says grocery store delivery services also reached out to help the family with other financial needs.
English says she was amazed by the generosity of people who read the post and paid it forward to the family who have been through a lot.
She says the man was so grateful for the help. He told English, that the support is breathing new life into his family, and that coming to Newfoundland and getting such support is “like living on another planet.”
English says if anyone still wanted to reach out and support the family she can connect them. Her email is nicolewalsh1979@hotmail.com.
