Celebrations are planned today in St. John’s to mark Ukrainian Independence Day.
August 24 marks the declaration of Independence in Ukraine in 1991.
The occasion is traditionally marked with a military parade in Kyiv, but events in Ukraine this year will be muted because of the ongoing war with Russia.
That’s not stopping Ukrainians in this province from marking the holiday. Bruce Lilly of the Ukrainian Cultural Association of NL says they have a full day of events planned, topped off by a concert by the Kubasonics on George Street at 7 p.m.
It starts with a sunflower pin-making event for kids at the Rooms from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. followed by a dinner starting at 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn for Ukrainians and those of Ukrainian heritage. Transportation will then be provided to participants from the Holiday Inn to the George Street stage for the Kubasonics show.
