A week into the sugar tax and it seems there are still more questions than answers.
Newfoundland and Labrador became the first province in the country to impose such a tax—20 cents a litre on “sugary” drinks. But just what qualifies would be difficult for a group of Philadelphia lawyers to figure out.
Anna Penney told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly this morning that she bought a case of unflavoured drinks with “no sugar” clearly written on the cans. Yet, when she got home, she had been charged over $2.00 for sugar tax. Penney called the retailer and was told that their supplier is simply applying the tax to all product.
She tried to contact the special phone line set up by government, which directed her to an email address.
The whole exercise leads her to believe that the “Rethink Your Drink” campaign is nothing but a tax grab.
She says nothing is organized and now the government is punishing not just those who consume sugary drinks but those who consume beverages that don’t fall into that category.
