Workers who handle marine cargo at the docks in St. John’s have a new agreement with shippers.
The Longshoremen’s Protective Union Local 1953 has approved a 6-year agreement with the St. John’s Shipping Association.
Chris Gosse, President of the local, says issues at hand included wages, benefits, pensions, union recognition and job security.
Two federal mediators helped seal the deal over Labour Day weekend. He says it closes the gap between the port of St. John’s and other Canadian ports.
