The recruitment of teachers is a challenge across the country and is being felt most profoundly in rural parts of the province, particularly Labrador.
NLTA President Trent Langdon says some jurisdictions, like northern Alberta and the territories, hire teachers from this province straight from university. He says government needs to move the hiring process up earlier to prevent teachers from being scooped up. He also says there are a lot of teaching positions in the province that don’t offer many hours.
He says some positions are as small as 0.15 of a position. “No one can live off of that,” says Langdon.
