A giant pumpkin being grown by a man in Shoal Harbour, near Clarenville, is certainly living up to its name.
Leslee Lake has dubbed it “Gourdzilla.”
He’s estimating a weight of between 650 and 670 lbs, and it has a circumference of 10 feet, 11 inches.
Lake says it was obvious from the beginning that the pumpkin was different, noting that from the beginning of August to now, the gourd has put on about 630 lbs.
He expects it to grow even larger before it’s harvested.
The pumpkin is gaining about one inch per day, and Lake is hoping it’ll be over 800 lbs when all is said and done.
As for what will be done with Gourdzilla when it’s harvested, Lake hasn’t made up his mind yet.
He has 30 years of experience as a wood carver, so he might try to carve something into it. He is open to other suggestions as well.
