The College of the North Atlantic is making changes to its emergency procedures to ensure campus safety.
Last week, active shooter drills were added at the Prince Philip Drive campus, though CNA would not elaborate if they would be implemented at all campuses across the province.
In a statement to VOCM News, the college said they have been adding various safety measures to their emergency response for the past few years and they’re not related to the evacuation of the St. John’s campus earlier this month.
Active shooter drills follow the practice of run, hide, defend—a process which first instructs students to safely evacuate if possible, hide in a space away from doors and windows secondly, and third to defend if the attacker enters the space.
CNA is the first post-secondary institution in the province to bring in an active shooter drill.
