It’s a hockey weekend not only in minor circles but at the senior level as well with the Herder Memorial Championship kicking off Friday night on the west coast.
The Deer Lake Red Wings, winners of the West Coast Senior Hockey League, host the Southern Shore Breakers, champions of the Avalon East Hockey League.
The series shifts to Mobile and the Ken Williams Memorial Arena next weekend before going back to the west coast if necessary.
This will be the first provincial championship since 2019. The Breakers captured the trophy last season as result of winning the AESHL finals, as the lone league in the province.
Tickets are $20 each.

The Herder Memorial Trophy was first presented in 1935 to honor the hockey playing Herder Family, who founded the Evening Telegram in 1879. The trophy is emblematic of the All-Newfoundland Senior Hockey Championship.
