From 2017 to 2021, close to 500 workers in the province’s construction industry received medical assistance or lost time from work due to slips, trips and falls in the workplace.
Five people lost their lives as a result of a fall over the same period.
April 17 to April 21 is Fall Prevention Awareness Week and CEO of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association, Jackie Manuel, says they’re doing their part to spread the word.
She says people might be surprised to learn that the many injuries in the workplace are not as a result of falls from a height.
She says up to 50 per cent of all injuries in the construction industry are as the result of slips, trips and falls on a level surface.
