Archaeologists are keeping their cards close to their chests, but they intend to return to a site where one of the oldest European coins found in what is now Canada was uncovered back in 2022.
The gold coin, a Henry VI quarter noble dating to the early 1400s, was discovered by Edward Hynes who reported it to the provincial government.
The coin is believed to have already been in circulation for some time before it was lost.
Officials will not identify the site, only to say it is on the south coast of the island.
Chief provincial archaeologist Jamie Brake says they’re hoping to return to the site again this summer.
He says they have an academic colleague who is interested in visiting and working at the site. He’s hoping it could lead to more intensive work at the site in future years.
