“Don’t let your geographic location hold you back.”
That from founder and CEO of Swiftsure Innovations, Deanne McCarthy.
McCarthy, who is based in Pasadena, worked as an ICU nurse in the province and found gaps in the oral health care for patients on ventilators.
She began her company in 2021 with an idea, and less than two years later, her medical device, the SwishKit, was FDA approved and is now on the market in the US. It allows nurses to provide better oral care to patients, and reduce pathogenic bacteria.
Last week, the company, received $2.3 million in funding to complete more clinical studies. McCarthy says it’s incredible how fast her idea turned into a fully fledged product.
McCarthy says she loves living in this province. She believes that you can accomplish anything from anywhere. Especially with technology like Zoom.
Industry, Energy and Technology Minister Andrew Parsons says government is proud to be an early investor in Swiftsure Innovations. He says projects like this one, demonstrates government’s willingness to invest in local entrepreneurs.
Parsons says there are supports out there for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians no matter where you live in the province. He says you can be a success not only on a regional level, but on a North American and global level.
