The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association has issued a release in the wake of a police shooting in the capital city earlier this week.
A 38-year-old man died and a police officer was sent to hospital for treatment as a result of the incident at Regatta Plaza on Monday, June 12.
Unconfirmed reports have identified the dead man as Omar Abdul Gassim Mohammed.
SIRT-NL is investgating the shooting. The RNCA late Friday issued a release calling the incident “a tragedy for all involved, and for our community.”
The association says the use of deadly force is one aspect of policing that should never be taken lightly and that they are cooperating fully with the SIRT-NL investigative team.
The RNCA says they are also committed to working with their members to ensure they receive the supports necessary following a potentially traumatic situation. The association says police “are rightfully subject to the most rigorous oversight possible, particularly with respect to the use of deadly force.”
RNCA President Staff Sergeant Mike Summers says officers are confident that SIRT-NL will conduct its investigation with the utmost of professionalism and diligence.
