A local veterinarian says she has seen a rise in the number of ticks in the province this summer. That said, Dr. Maggie Brown-Bury notes that over the course of this summer she has only seen about 12.
While that is not a lot in comparison to places that have a tick problem, it is more than what would normally be seen here.
For the most part, Brown-Bury says she has been seeing them pop up in the central region of the island.

She says there are a lot of ticks on the mainland, and they get here by hitching rides on people and migratory birds.
Brown-Bury recommends that pet owners whose dogs are out in tall grass or in the woods give them a good once-over when they get home.
