It may seem unusual this time of year, but plenty of food is keeping a few humpbacks in Newfoundland waters.
The gentle giants are regular visitors to the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador in the spring and early summer, converging with the icebergs and the arrival of the capelin.
Typically they move to warmer climes in the winter months, but a humpback was recently spotted off Cape Spear by an observant visitor to the historic site.
Marine mammal researcher with DFO Dr. Jack Lawson confirms the whale is a humpback, likely feeding on the plentiful schools of small mackerel and herring off the coast.
