The Canada-European Union Summit in St. John’s has wrapped up, and one of the main topics of discussion was clean hydrogen.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hosted Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen for the two day event, discussing areas of mutual concern. Newfoundland and Labrador has an emerging green hydrogen sector, and as von der Leyen explains, there is a green hydrogen agreement to come out of the meetings.
She says they want to boost trans-Atlantic hydrogen trade. As such, they have announced a joint green hydrogen roadmap to help develop the industry on both sides of the Atlantic, which will help ensure that both the supply and the demand will be there.
MP Seamus O’Regan says the roadmap is something that has been under development since he was Natural Resources Minister.
He says they not only need to create the supply and demand for the industry, they need to create a market for it.
O’Regan says creating a new industry without doing it on the backs of taxpayers can be difficult, but with such a big market in Europe he hopes that they will be able to drive down the prices associated with hydrogen.
