The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra has chosen its RBC Emerging Artist Conductor for the Year of the Arts season.
Andrei Popkov has been named to the position for 2023-24, after coming to the country less than a year ago. Originally from Russia, the first public event he ever attended in Canada was a NSO concert. Popkov has a long history of music in Togliatti, Russia, working with multiple orchestral organizations.
Through the position, Popkov will work directly with NSO Principle Conductor Marc David, established professional musicians and celebrated guest artists. He will also support educational work through upcoming projects in the spring. Popkov will work on a joint project between the NSO and Kittiwake Dance Theatre planned for March.
