One of the darkest days in Canadian aviation history happened in this province on this day in 1985.
An Arrow Air DC-8 carrying 248 American troops, took off from Gander International en route to Kentucky, but the aircraft crashed just seconds after take-off.
All 248 passengers and 8 crew members were killed in the deadliest aviation accident ever on Canadian soil.
Several theories as to what caused the plane to crash have been examined, but no true cause was ever determined.
The site of the crash near Gander Lake is now a memorial dedicated to the victims.
