The auditor general in this province is concerned about the cost of decommissioning offshore oil wells.

AG Denise Hanrahan, in her 2023 Financial Statements Audit, recommends that government conclude its work to determine the cost of shutting down the oil projects.

Government has told her that it is working with its Department of Industry, Energy and Technology to review the current projects to determinate if an estimate of the decommissioning costs can be determined, how the costs will factor into offshore oil royalties, and what the liabilities to the province might be.

Hanrahan has been seeking the information for about three years.
