Dean Penney, the man charged with first-degree murder in the presumed death of Jennifer Hillier-Penney, is seeking some freedom as his case makes its way through the courts.
The 51-year-old Penney has been in custody since his arrest exactly three months ago in the Deer Lake area.
It came more than seven years after the disappearance of his estranged wife in St. Anthony in November of 2016.
There has been no sign of her since then.
Defence lawyer Jason Edwards filed the application for bail with the Supreme Court in Corner Brook, with three days set aside in mid-April to hear arguments for and against Penney’s release.
The preliminary inquiry, which will determine if there’s enough evidence to send the case to trial, is set for late summer and into the fall.
