The protest at Confederation Building continues but not to the same degree we saw yesterday.
The FFAW met with Fisheries Minister Elvis Loveless for a couple of hours this week and the two made significant progress on the issue of lowering provincial trade barriers on the purchase of all species including crab. But Jason Spingle, Secretary-Treasurer of the FFAW, says that’s where the progress stopped.
He’s puzzled as to why government wouldn’t move to address caps on the amount of crab a plant can process. They also wish to see more licences issued to expand the number of plants that can buy and process product.
A similar protest is also taking place outside the Sir Richard Squire Building in Corner Brook.
Meanwhile, the Association of Seafood Processors had called a news conference to address some of the issues being raised in the fishery, but called it off for reasons unknown. They will instead issue a statement later today.
