The provincial government has announced details around two new urgent care centres for the metro region.
Health Minister Tom Osborne made the announcement today inside the old Costco building on Stavanger Drive, which has been reduced to a shell as construction takes place to convert it into an ambulatory care hub.
But government has also revealed a second use for that space.
A $900,000 contract has been awarded to the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Alliance to operate a section of that space as an urgent care centre.
As well, a second contract, valued at $1.2 million annually, has been awarded to the Morgan Group of Companies to construct another urgent care centre near the intersection of Topsail and Blackmarsh roads.
NL Health Services will provide the medical care at both locations.
Government says the goal of the centres is to ease pressure on emergency departments by treating patients for urgent, but non-life threatening issues such as sprains and strains, new and worsening non-emergent pain, fevers and infections.
Both locations, including the previously announced ambulatory care hub, are scheduled to open in 2025.
