Brad Gushue believes his Newfoundland and Labrador rink is at its peak, and the best in the world, when they play like it.
The winningest skip in Brier history and his third, Mark Nichols, attended the launch of the Uber ride-sharing service in Quidi Vidi Village yesterday.
Later, in an interview with VOCM News, Gushue described this past season as “a rollercoaster,” with a slow start but a strong finish.
Gushue won his record sixth Brier title in March, following that up with another silver medal at the Worlds, and a Players’ Championship in Toronto.
He points to that run as evidence of the team’s top standing.
“You know, I think we’re still playing at a very high level and I still think we’re the best team in the world when we play the way we’re capable of playing,” he said. “With that said, you’d probably have to say that we’re at our peak, and you just want to stay on that peak as long as possible and get as much out of it as you can.”
Meanwhile, Gushue and Nichols say they’re looking forward to the KIOTI National Grand Slam event in St. John’s in November.
But they’re equally anxious to see their namesake highway completed.
“We get messages all the time, ‘when is it gonna be done?’ but it’s not our decision!” exclaimed a semi-frustrated Nichols. “We’re gonna put a toll booth on there shortly,” quipped Gushue, adding “we’d love to know the completion date, but it is what it is.”
Funding to finish the Team Gushue Highway was announced this time last year, but no timeline was released.
