The MHA for Terra Nova raised questions about available mental health supports in the wake of some recent incidents in his district.
Lloyd Parrott made the comments during budget debate in the House of Assembly—referencing a recent call to VOCM Open Line from the father of a young man who was arrested by police after repeatedly seeking help from the mental health system.
The man was arrested after a bizarre incident in Glovertown in which somebody who was out of control swung a weapon at anybody who was nearby.
“I listened to the minister over there today talking about Doorways and 811. He should call the people that were on Open Line on Friday morning,” Parrott told the House. “He should call that family whose 23-year-old son had a mental breakdown over two years ago. He’s gone to Doorways, he’s called 811, he’s been in the Waterford. As a matter of fact, he was in the Waterford at the lowest time of his life, and guess what happened to him? They put him in a cab, and sent him home. We don’t have the ability to address those issues.”
