The Opposition says 51 people died of drug overdose in the province last year, a number revealed through ATIPP requests.
That represents a 143 per cent increase since 2019. According to Opposition Leader Tony Wakeham, in September, 24 overdose deaths were reported over an eight month period, but four months later, that number doubled to 51.
Wakeham questioned Premier Andrew Furey about the “accelerating rate” of overdose deaths in the province.
“Do you think your government is doing enough to address the situation?” Wakeham asked.
Premier Furey says the situation that has gradually moved eastward and they’re making more Narcan kits available across the province, increasing public awareness and education, and incorporating mental health and addiction strategies into all government departments.
