The recurring issue of slippery crosswalks was broached at this week’s St. John’s council meeting, as the rain poured down outside.
It came up as councillors were approving almost $100,000 worth of glass beads, which make road markings, including crosswalks, more visible.
That prompted a question about the slickness of crosswalks, and whether anything could be done about it.
Deputy City Manager for Public Works, Lynnann Winsor, said the city is always on the lookout for safer solutions. But she said it comes down to a weighing of the risks.
“It is less risk to paint the crosswalks than not to paint them, but it’s just a reminder for everyone to be careful,” she said.
“We will always keep our eyes open for other products that could maybe help reduce the slipperiness and make things safer for sure.”
