NL Hydro expects to address a vibration issue involving one of four turbines at the Muskrat Falls site later this year.
CEO Jennifer Williams told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that the issue affects unit 2, when it’s operating at a certain power level.
As a result, NL Hydro has not been running that unit at the power level when vibration occurs, and that has not affected its ability to supply power from Muskrat Falls, nor has the vibration issue affected the other three turbines.
Williams says NL Hydro does intend to address the issue this year.
“From a long-term perspective, whether this is a 50, 60, 80 year, 100 year asset, we intend to address that vibration issue,” says Williams. “We could delay that if we want until a year, or two, or three or four down the road, and it still wouldn’t affect reliability, but we are choosing to address that vibration issue later this year.”
