Premier Andrew Furey says he has accepted an invitation to attend the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.
Earlier this week, Trump doubled down on his plan to impose a 25 per cent tariff on goods imported from Canada, and threatened “economic force” to compel the country to join the US.
Trump’s rhetoric has sparked much concern from organizations and politicians from across the country, and Furey is no exception.
Furey says in addition to being in attendance for the inauguration, he does plan to attend with other premiers when they make the trip.
“There will be…multiple opportunities to revisit Washington in a coordinated effort with a team Canada approach to ensure that they understand the punitive nature to the United states.”
The premier says Trump’s comments should not be taken lightly.
Furey argues Trump’s history is to “create chaos…in a confusion with humour, but then often those become policy statements and realities.” He says to dismiss Trump’s comments as jokes is not the right thing to do.
